Family fun orienteering heading to Sawtell

BUSH ‘n’ Beach Orienteering Club are kicking off their 2022 season with a string of events at Sawtell.

Held at various parks and reserves in Sawtell in March, the events include a ‘Very Easy’ line course for children, families and beginners as well as a more advanced ‘Score’ Course.

“The ‘Line’ course is a great way to introduce young kids to map reading,” Secretary Helen O’Callaghan said.

“Within a small area, kids will have to find a ‘control’ in numbered order on a map.

“At each ‘control’ there will be an orange and white orienteering control flag and an electronic recording system for you to register your visit.”

Orienteering is like a big treasure hunt and a fantastic activity for families.

Individuals or teams run or walk their choice of course.

“The ‘Score’ course is longer with a 60 minute time limit but in this format you can choose which order you visit the controls in.

“The aim is to achieve as many points as possible and different controls have different point values,” Helen said.

Bush ‘n’ Beach Orienteering Club will be hosting three orienteering events on Wednesday nights starting from 5pm.

The events are all at Sawtell including Wednesday March 16 at Bayldon Road Reserve, Wednesday March 23 at Richardson Park and Wednesday March 30 March at Boronia Park.

Cost is $8 per adult, $4 per child or $20 per family with discount for those who are club members.
