BAPTISTCare Kularoo residents enjoyed reminiscing recently as part of the Great Lakes Council Creative Ageing Project.

The artistic program encouraged local seniors to focus on a memory and tell a story through a painting, drawing or creative writing.

The program culminated in an inspiring exhibition that was held at the Great Lakes Council, before touring to Stroud, Tea Gardens and North Arm Cove.

BaptistCare Kularoo resident, Eric Selfie, said he enjoyed taking part in the project that saw him tell a story of building beautiful model boats.

“I have been to so many interesting places over many years so I like telling my stories to give other people the enjoyment of my life experiences.”

Eric shares his story in full below:

“My brother-in-law and myself built a 23 foot fishing boat and sailed it up to Forster. My brother-in-law wasn’t as experienced a fisherman as I thought so I bought his share and carried on with his oldest brother who was a commercial fisherman.”

“At retirement I tried to grow fuchsias. They didn’t pan out – wrong country – too hot. After failing the fuchsia test I decided to build model ships. I built boats and put them in a show in Port Macquarie.”

“I finished the Mayflower and an English warship – a double-decker. Then I moved on to the Endeavour.”

“While waiting for a book of plans I had an American book and decided to try my hand at building a rowboat – which would end up on the Endeavour. When finished I am going to give the boat to the Tuncurry Museum.”
