The secretary of the group Russ Steer said, “The core functions of our group are for men to come, have a yarn, learn some new skills, and to do work for the community.”

Members are proud of their handiwork and the ways they have supported men’s mental health.

President John Pryde said, “Some of our members mightn’t have many people they can turn to as their wives might have sadly passed away [so] we provide a space where they can come have some tea, learn something new and socialise.

“It’s ok for men to just come for the tea and a chat and go home too.”

According to the Australian Institute Of Health And Welfare, 18 percent of males are experiencing social isolation.

In what has been called “a male loneliness epidemic”, charities like the Men’s Shed are set up to combat this.

The Dungog Branch of the Men’s Shed is located in Simmonds Lane in an ex-Hunter Water works depot.

Entering its seventeenth year, the group possesses a wide variety of equipment and tools so that members can participate in multi-disciplinary work.

There are tools for leatherworking, blacksmithing, metalworking, and woodworking.

If anyone is interested in joining they can contact secretary Russ Steer on 0405368084.
