Or media@newsofthearea.com.au Or CLICK FOR ADVERT QUOTE The history behind the Campvale landscape mounds goes back to October 2012 when members of our Tidy Towns committee expressed concerns about untidy looking entrances into our community with piles of road building materials, litter, bulky goods rubbish and cars for sale all over the intersection corners. Councillor Geoff Dingle said he approached Peter Murray who was the Port Stephens Council Assets manager at the time and he agreed the Tidy Towns committee could plan to build boomerang style mounds in appropriate locations on the North East and North West corners. They started with the smaller mound on the North East corner, building a core, then overlaying with topsoil and then mulch. The Tidy Towns purchased plants from the Ngioka nursery and commenced planting. Geoff Dingle told News Of The Area, “The mounds have been a big hit and we get lots of positive comments from locals and visitors.” “However, it has been a real struggle to establish good plant coverage when battling massive loss of plants from thieves, vandalism, damage from four wheel drives, interference from Ausgrid and their contractors digging up our plantings and parking equipment and concrete poles all over our efforts.” “With no water on site, we have struggled to establish plants and the extreme hot weather and exposed nature of the site has taken its toll,” he said. Despite all these efforts to stymie them, Medowie Tidy Towns has valiantly persisted, and feel they are gradually winning. The mounds are slowing getting where they want them, to be reasonably self-sustaining with moderate pruning and weed management. Councillor Dingle said, “We are now commencing negotiation with Hunter Water who are the owners of land on the Eastern side of the Grahamstown intersection into Medowie hoping we can create a landscape mound in this location.” “First impressions are always important and as proud members of the Medowie community, Medowie Tidy Towns believe that if the entrance to our community looks tidy and cared for, then this sets the tone for both visitors and residents alike.” By Rachael VAUGHAN Workers tending to the mounds to build them up.
