Formally part of the seat of Paterson represented by Mr Bob Baldwin MP, Karuah and the entire Great Lakes Local Government Area are now officially part of the Federal seat of Lyne.

The boundary changes mean a shift south for Lyne, losing Port Macquarie and picking up over half of Paterson.

The new boundaries stretch from Karuah in the South to Lake Cathie and Ballengarra in the North.

Current sitting member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie, elected to the seat in 2013, said he is pleased to have the opportunity to represent the Myall Coast community.

“I’m very much looking forward to representing the people of this beautiful part of Australia and I am really excited about the future prospects for this region,” he said. NOTA_TILE_lowres_paper ad

“I’ve already had a number of visits to the area, spoken to a number of locals and have also received a briefing from the Great Lakes Deputy Mayor about some of the issues council has been working on.”

“I am planning on undertaking a series of forums throughout the electorate over the coming weeks.”

Dr Gillespie, who had a successful medical career spanning over 20 years as a physician and medical educator on the Mid-North Coast, will be focusing his attention on a number of issues concerning his new electorate. NOTA_R&RP_lowres_121115

Local infrastructures, small business, tax reforms, health cover and medical services, aged care and tackling the fight against drugs are all on Dr Gillespie’s list of priorities.

Federal Member for Paterson Mr Bob Baldwin, who now goes from a safe conservative seat to a marginal Labor seat, expressed his sadness at losing more than half his area to Lyne.

“Sadly, my much loved communities including Karuah, Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Nerong, Bulahdelah, North Arm Cove, Tahlee, Bundabah and Pindimar will all fall into the Federal Seat of Lyne,” he said.

“I thank you all for your support and friendships made over so many years, it has indeed been an honour to represent these communities and they will always have a special place in my heart.”Pelican Pest Tea Gardens

Dr Gillespie intends his association with the community will be ongoing with confirmation he will contest the seat in the 2016 Federal Election.

  1. I have been working very hard everyday for the past six months developing a community garden for Karuah Information Centre with no funding or volunteer help. The Garden is failing due after two attempts to rebuild in difficult conditions.an lack of resources. I have a plan for an eco friendly self sustaining garden which requires very little watering, fertilising ,weeding, pesticides or digging. This method dramatically reduces labour intensity and recycles all water, nutrients.and compost waste automatically. I would like to know how to apply for funding grant to establish this system and also how to get labour provided by people working for welfare who would be interested in the education program that will go with it. This is an innovative project that I believe will revolutionise urban community gardens. Would you be able to visit Karuah Information Centre and speak to staff there and arrange for me to give a presentation of the system to council. The long term benefits are: Improved vegetation growth and reduced maintenance costs and self sustainability even in the worst of weather conditions.. Your gracious interest is welcome. I look forward to speaking with you.
    Regards
    Peter James
