Local historian David’s presentation concentrated on the life of Sir Edward Parry who became Commissioner of the Australian Agricultural Company based at Tahlee in the 1830’s. Parry had been an eminent naval officer and Arctic explorer before taking up the reins of the AA Company. His work established the company as a profitable enterprise in agriculture, mining and trading. David outlined Parry’s early interest in steam power in boats and mentioned the fact that Parry was responsible for the building of The Karuah, the first steam powered boat to be built in Port Stephens. Tony explored his own construction of steam engines and steam powered boats and in particular his building of the modern-day steam launch The Karuah.
