Dark horses to the fore in Coffs Club Champs

WHEN the field tees-off on Saturday morning for the Brown & Hurley Coffs Harbour Golf Club’s Men’s Club Championships, predicting who’s going to take out the top prize in 2021 is a more difficult proposition than it has been in past years.

The club’s head professional Matt Allan said the fact the winner of the 72-hole stroke event is so hard to pick is great for those not only playing but watching as well.

“I think it’s really open, I think it’s exciting,” Allan said.

“You’ve got your usual suspects like Dan Swain, David Rook and Shane Cutmore along with young guns like Aden Louez and Billy Flanagan.

“But we’ve also got some sneaky ones in there too like Dave Newick, Logan Toms and Jason Webb who all finished one stroke away from playing in a play-off for the North Coast Amateur Open last week.

“It’s certainly not a one-horse race which it has felt like a little bit in past years.”

While simply beating the other players in the field is hard enough in a club championship, Allan said an added degree of difficulty will need to be overcome by the leaders.

“Obviously weather is going to play a part and it will be wet, the month of November they’re saying could be very wet,” he said.

“But with the greens staff that we’re so lucky to have at this club, I bet the greens will get better and quicker as we get deeper into the championships so I would say it’s going to be a great event.”
