THE ‘Crazy Crafters’ – a group run out of the Bulahdelah Uniting Church – has sewn more than 80 masks to be given for free to locals in need.

Craft group coordinator Meredyth Rae, said the group has only been operating for a couple months but has already accomplished so much.

“We normally all bring whatever we’re individually working on and spend the time chatting and laughing,” said Ms Rae.

“One of our members, Francene Barden, was actually the instigator of the mask making.”

“She was concerned that there may be people in our local community who may not be able to access masks because of finances or isolation,” she said.

Ms Barden brought five sample masks from different patterns to the next meet up for group members to choose from.

“Once we had our sample, we all brought needed supplies from home,” Ms Rae continued.

“Fabric, elastic, sewing machines, and whatever else was required, and worked for about six hours,” she said.

The group was able to produce more than 80 masks in one sitting, and have provided some to RTC, Anglican Op Shop and local newsagent to distribute free of charge to those who ask.

“We’re not, at this stage, planning on making more masks, but will be guided by the needs of our community,” said Ms Rae.

“We all really enjoyed our day working on a project together and may consider another community project down the track.”

“In the meantime, we get to pull out those half-made projects from the back of the cupboard at home and dedicate some time to finally completing them,” she said.
