John is a retired Marine Biologist with a PHD in Agriculture. John is the chair of the Port Stephens Myall Lakes Estuary and Coastal Zone Management Committee, the chair of the Port Stephens Great Lakes Marine Parks Advisory Committee and the vice-president of the Tomaree Sports Council. He is a member of several parks and reserves committees across the Tomaree Peninsula. John also sits on the community committee for the Real Futures Foundation which supports at risk youth in Port Stephens and is president of the Port Stephens Neighbourhood Centre. Councillor Nell told News Of The Area, “This will be my 30th year serving on Council and it has been a privilege to serve Port Stephens.” “We need to act on the revitalisation of the Nelson Bay CBD, set our planned heights and get on with the improvements to the zone; we need to demolish the Donald Street East car park and develop the site ensuring that we maintain the existing number of parking spaces or increase the capacity for parking.” “Of great importance is our environment and as such we need to protect the Ngioka Centre as a native tree nursery, and gain protection for Mambo Wetlands to protect this asset for the community into the future.” “We need to meet the challenge of providing suitable amenities for both men and women at all our sporting facilities catering to all codes for all potential participants, as well as building a 25m indoor heated lap pool for the residents of the Tomaree Peninsula,” he said.
