Council extends upgrade of The Lakes Way Bungwahl

MidCoast Council has reconstructed a 600 metre section of The Lakes Way in time for the busy holiday season, south of the upgrade completed in 2015 near the Seal Rocks Road intersection at Bungwahl.

The project included the reconstruction and widening of the road, construction of new concrete dish drains to improve drainage, renewal of the piped stormwater drainage system and the installation of new guardrail safety barrier. The new design also includes sealed shoulders on both sides of the road.

Council’s Operations staff completed the construction works and Manager Operations (South), Mr Jamie Condie says “The project has run smoothly and is a credit to all staff involved”.

“We thank the local residents in Bungwahl and road users for their patience whilst this important work was undertaken.”

These improvements have been completed through Council’s Regional Road Construction Program with funding provided from the Roads and Maritime Services Repair Program and Regional Roads Block Grant.

“The works are a significant improvement to this section of road” said Jamie Condie. “Prior to the work being completed this section of The Lakes Way was in poor condition requiring regular maintenance to repair the road surface. The road was quite narrow and the road alignment did not meet current standards.”

Further work on The Lakes Way in Bungwahl is expected to be undertaken in the 2017/2018 financial year as part of Council’s ongoing commitment to upgrade The Lakes Way.
