THE NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has reported that the Corindi River has been cleared of flood debris by an EPA contractor.

The clean up of the storm and flood debris occurred as a part of the state’s biggest ever clean up of waterways including shorelines, waterways and beaches.

The clean up follows the severe rain and floods in March.

Approximately 65 cubic metres of waste has been removed from the river since clean-up works commenced in early April by the EPA contractor Avcon Projects Australasia.

“The clean-up involved a significant amount of planning and combined innovative technology and aerial surveillance with on the ground intelligence from the public, community groups, council and other agencies to locate debris and waste,” Ms Ryan said.

“The end result means we have an enormous amount of debris now removed from the river, including a substantial amount of debris from surrounding agricultural activities like plastic sheeting, ‘grow bags’ and containers all part of the clean-up”.

The clean-up spanned a five-kilometre length of the river upstream of the Pacific Highway, which the EPA said was effective in stopping the waste moving further downstream into the Solitary Islands Marine Park where it would pose a risk to marine life.

Ms Ryan thanked the community for their patience during the clean-up.
