A percentage of proceeds from the exhibition will go to Caring for Our Port Stephens Youth (COPSY). COPSY has consulted widely following a report completed last December on the state of youth mental health services in Port Stephens. Currently, Copsy are asking local schools what outreach onsite programmes on mental health they are currently sourcing. There are several organisations that do such programs, some of which are budget constrained, which is where COPSY may be able to help. COPSY Inc. is a registered charity, not a service provider, and its aim is to facilitate and help fund best practice mental health promotion and awareness in school programs, as well as considering other initiatives including the promotion of online resources and early intervention models. “We are pleased to announce that there are a couple of exciting events coming up that will help promote improved youth mental services,” John DeRidder, President of COPSY told News Of The Area. “First, we were very pleased when the Artisan Collective in Nelson Bay approached us and said they would like to hold an exhibition ‘Art in Mind’ to promote mental health,” Mr DeRidder said. “Second, COPSY is pleased to support the very special evening ‘Lifting the Lid on Mental Illness’ to be held at Wests Nelson Bay Diggers from 5.30pm on 4 May,” Mr DeRidder added. Two well known and distinguished professors, Helen Christensen and Cyndi Weickert, will present on the night, followed by a Q&A panel. Bookings are not necessary. By Jewell DRURY
