THE Coffs United Lions defeated the Coffs Coast Tigers 2-0 to remain top of the reserve grade competition before the remaining matches for the day were postponed due to the lockdown.

The Lions are seeking to defend their reserve grade title and their Tuscan coach Luca Paolacci wants to see more clinical finishing.

“We played well, especially in the first half, it was good to see the boys do what we tried on the training ground during the week.

“But we must improve in scoring, every game we have 10 to 15 attempts to score but only convert two or three.

“We will be ready for the finals if we are going to play them,” said the Tuscan taskmaster.

Lions right back Scott Cawley emphasised the importance of shape as he eyes another reserve grade premiership.

“We played very well against a tough Tigers side who are very strong every year in reserve grade.

“We’re happy enough with the three points on a 2-0 win, but with two missed penalties in the second half, we really should have stretched that scoreline a bit further.

“Our coach Luca has been stressing the importance of our shape; in particular, keeping tight defensive and midfield lines.

“I think it worked really well yesterday, with a clean sheet for our efforts.”

Scott reiterated the need for accuracy in front of goal.

“We need to improve in front of goal and that will be our focus moving into finals, we have the players that can do it, with some amazing squad depth this year.

“We’re keen to see out all of our games, three points in our last fixture against the Port Saints will secure us the premiership.

“Then it’s a simple equation, get over the semi final hurdle and straight into the grand final.

“There’s a few teams nipping at our heels, so we’ll be up for a tough battle, regardless of who it ends up being,” said Scott.
