Playing at Rex Hardaker Oval on Saturday, the Coffs girls maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought 20-18 win over another of the fancied teams in Wauchope.

One of Coffs Harbour’s key playmakers Zoie Shreiweis said playing in an expanded North Coast competition rather than just a Coffs Coast one means the girls are facing stronger opposition each week.

Ït’s a heaps better competition this year,” she said.

Other open grade results last week saw Wingham produce a strong second half to defeat Kendall 38-18, Macleay Valley thrashed the struggling Port Sharks 56-6 while Port City was too good for Lower Macleay winning 42-14.

The Coffs team has veteran coach Scott Mieni at the helm and the girls are appreciating his input.

“With Scotty guiding us the last couple of weeks it’s been going great so we’re very lucky to have him,” Shreiweis said.

Sawtell is fielding two teams in the age divisions this season. Unfortunately for the Panthers neither of their teams were able to collect a win on Saturday.

Bowraville proved too strong for Sawtell in the under-15s winning an entertaining match 36-22.

In the under-17s Sawtell lost a close one 18-16 to Taree Panthers.

The third round of matches this weekend are being played at Wauchope.

The Comets will be playing Kendall and Shreiweis believes this weekend will be a difficult proposition with some players missing including captain Greta Smith.

“If we can keep improving I think we’ve definitely got what it takes to win but a few of our core players will be missing on Saturday,” she said.

“That will make it hard for us.”

The competition returns to the Coffs Coast on 28 November when another round of the women’s rugby league is being played at Geoff King Motors Park.
