COFFS Harbour will host the NSW Squash State Junior Championships this weekend where the squash centre will be buzzing with players and supporters from six states across Australia.

The Coffs Harbour Squash and Swim Centre has a great record in attracting major events as part of the Squash Australia AJST Tour, and NSW Squash Calendar.

Having hosted the State Championships in 2014 and 2018, the world class facility has been preparing to host the NSW Squash and Junior Pathways Performance Program for 2022.

Players will be competing in five age divisions from Under 11 to Under 19 for both boys and girls.

The competition hits off on Saturday 9 July from 9am with more than 170 matches scheduled over two days of competition.

Finals will commence on Sunday from 12.30pm and will conclude with the Under 19s championships at 2.30pm followed by presentations and awards.

Head coach at Coffs Harbour Squash and Swim Centre, Peter Saxby, explained the significance of the event.

“The State Championships are the pinnacle event on the NSW State Calendar and classified as a Gold Event for State and Australian ranking points,” he said.

“The tournament holds significance for all the juniors as at completion of the tournament the NSW State Junior Team will be announced for the upcoming Australian Age Championships in September to be held in Perth WA.

“Junior Pathways and State Coach Jemma Wratten and NSW Squash Director Jay Kross will be closely watching performances throughout the weekend with several Coffs Harbour juniors looking to press their claims for selection with strong performances during the tournament, including Madison Nargar in the under 13 Girls, Lachlan and Joshua Walmsley in the under 17 Boys and Micaylah Tidey in the under 19 Girls.”

Sports tourism is a key industry in Coffs Harbour and squash is an opportunity to combine sport with the family holiday.

“The large influx of players and supporters will have the opportunity to take in local city venues, before gathering at the popular hospitality sponsors The Coffs Hotel for Saturday night’s tournament dinner before Sunday’s challenging finals,” concluded Peter.
