COFFS Harbour Boardriders Club have celebrated another successful year in the surf by hosting their end of year presentation at the Hoey Moey.

The club’s best surfers of 2021 were recognised with awards in a number of different age divisions.

In addition to celebrating their end of year presentation, the Coffs Harbour Boardriders Club also qualified for the Australian Boardriders Battle Grand Final last weekend.

The Coffs club clinched their ticket to the national final in Newcastle after winning on their home break in the Australian Boardriders Battle Series event in Coffs Harbour.

The Coffs Harbour Boardriders Club will now take their place amongst the final 24 clubs in Australia who will contest the Australian Boardriders Battle (ABB) Grand Final at Newcastle in February.

Coffs Harbour Boardriders Club events coordinator Sharni Winkler said it was a proud moment for the club to once again qualify for the national final.

“We just love going to Newcastle as our annual trip, we have so many supporters and family that just come to watch, we go out for dinners as a big family,” she said.

“It was extra special qualifying this year, as our team coaches decided to have more juniors represent our club this year in the team, and wow did they do us proud.

“For many of them it was their first time competing in the ABB and the pressure when you surf for your club is so different to surfing your own individual heat.

“None of our juniors buckled under the pressure and qualified our club for Newcastle under the guidance of some of the senior surfers, a massively proud moment for us all.”

Winkler described to News Of The Area the fun nature of the recent presentation night.

“It was hilarious, we try to come up with different themed events for our end of year preso and I have to say this year’s ‘Bogans and Beauty’ theme I think was the best yet,” she said.

“Everyone got involved in the theme, and every single division winner won a brand new surfboard and a stack of other prizes (over $25k worth), plus we had a heap of lucky door prizes.”

Winkler looked back on another successful surfing year for the club.

“Considering navigating through all the COVID restrictions I think we had a great year,” she said.

“We managed to only drop two comps and run all others throughout the year, we have a great committee so we can make quick decisions and are able to be flexible when we need to.

“There weren’t anywhere near as many national comps the kids could compete in so it was very important to us to continue our season till the end of the year so all members still had an event to compete in and keep connected through social events for the year.”
