The Coffs Breakers have claimed their first AFL North Coast women’s title, making up for the disappointment of a year earlier.

A year ago the Breakers were on top of the ladder all season only to find disappointment in the finals. On Saturday the Breakers refused to let the opportunity slip in the grand final, proving harder for longer against Northern Beaches, winning 6.4 (40) to 3.0 (18).

The first quarter at the C.ex Coffs International Stadium was an arm-wrestle with the Breakers kicking the only goal of the term.

A goal early in the second by Britt Hargreaves gave the Blues plenty of hope but the Breakers responded with two quick majors to Tarryn Arnold.

Breakers captain Katika Adams said Northern Beaches provided stiff opposition.

“They definitely came out in the first quarter and I think that really shocked us a little bit,” Adams said.

“But I think inevitably with the skill we play and the way we play for each other, I think that’s what makes us the team we are and that’s what makes a difference.”

Coffs led by 14 points at the last break but when Blues skipper Alana Hanson calmly slotted home a set shot after a strong tackle the margin had been whittled back to just nine points.

Driven forward by Emily Conlan, the Breakers steadied and Adams goaled from close range with a kick off the ground before Amy Johanson nailed the sealer late in the contest.

Northern Beaches coach Adrian Roberts was proud of his side and couldn’t fault the commitment of the Blues.

“I think we tackled harder than they (the Breakers) did,” Roberts said.

“I think we put them under pressure which was our game plan, tackled hard and probably didn’t have the legs that they had but couldn’t be prouder of the girls with their tackling and their pressure.

“I think with the number of new players we’ve got in our team, next year we’ll be stronger.”

Adams said winning the grand final was a just reward for the Breakers.

“What the girls have been able to bring home this year through working hard, dedication, showing up to training and being really skilful has made us the team we are today,” she said.
