RESIDENTS intending to join the Class Action against the Williamtown Contamination should aim to get their documents signed and sent by the end of July.

Lead by Gadens Law Firm, the class action is financially backed by IMF Bentham.

This means that as long as numbers are met, IMF backs the litigation on a no win no fee contract.

In the case of a win, the litigation fee comes out of the settlement and compensation total.

Over 200 contracts have already been signed and returned to Gadens with over 450 people having registered their interest, with this number growing daily.

Rhianna Gorfine of Williamtown and Surrounds Action Group told New Of The Area, “The Class action will provide the whole community a future, especially given that banks aren’t lending and there is no economic stability in the area.”

“At the moment, we still haven’t had confirmation that the agencies and defence actually believe that there are detrimental effects to human health, which an ever increasing international body is proving otherwise,” she said.

The Class Action will reserve right to future health impacts relating to the contamination.

“The closure of the waterways has abruptly killed the livelihoods of many in the area and those in and around the red zone have also seen their house and land values plummet as a result of the stigma of the contamination.”

“The current proposals by the federal government do not offer any realistic or long term proposals to deal with this issue,” said Ben Allen, a partner at Gadens.

Those who have not completed or submitted their formal documentation must have done so by the end of the month.

It is vital that critical mass be achieved in order for the Class Action to both go ahead and for the funder to ensure they can carry out their no win no fee obligation.
