ORIENTATION WEEK at many regional universities kicked off this week giving new students a taste of campus life to prepare them for the demanding academic road ahead.

Myall Coast student Chloe Shultz, who is enrolled in a Bachelor of Social Work at the University of New England (UNE), recently moved into student accommodation at the University’s Armidale Campus.

“I decided to study at UNE because it is a regional university that has small class sizes, similar to what we had at Bulahdelah,” Chloe said.

“I also like the idea of being away and living on campus so I can gain more independence.”

Chloe is hoping her four-year degree will lead to working in a hospital unit specialising in eating disorders.

To help transition to University, Chloe is attending introductory lectures, information sessions and fun social events during the week-long orientation.

“I had a big break after finishing high school so it might take me awhile to get back into study, but I’ve got a lot of people around me that are very supportive,” Chloe said.

“I’ve also got an academic mentor and there are study nights and help with essay writing.”

Chloe told News Of The Area she is enjoying the social aspect of university and is looking forward to meeting new people.

“There are many international students, so I hope to get to know them and learn about their cultures,” she said.

“I’m also looking at getting into sport, I’m not a sporting person but I’m going to give it a go.”

Chloe was awarded a $2,000 UNE scholarship at the end of last year which she will combine with money saved from a part-time job to assist with expenses while studying.

“I’ve been working since I was 14 so I’ve saved up quite a fair bit, and my parents will help out as well,” Chloe said.

Formal lectures and tutorials at UNE will begin on 20 February.
