Transport for NSW is carrying out work to strengthen the bridge, to ensure its ongoing structural integrity and its continued ability to carry heavy vehicles.

Work started on Monday 16 November with the installation of scaffolding for external bridge works.

Work will be carried out between 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday and is expected to be completed in nine months, weather permitting.

A detour will be in place until Wednesday 30 June 2021 for heavy vehicles of over 68 tonnes travelling northbound towards Stockton or southbound towards Newcastle, onto Hexham Bridge via the M1 Pacific Highway or Nelson Bay Road and then Cabbage Tree Road.

There will be limited impacts on light vehicle traffic as most of the work will be carried out from the scaffolding located under the bridge.

To reduce impact to motorists, most of the major work will be carried out at night, with traffic control in place and one lane each way open at all times.
