CENTRAL Coast Oztag walked away from Coffs Harbour as the big winners of the Senior State Cup held on the weekend.

Of the 21 finals played at C.ex Coffs International Stadium on Sunday, the Central Coast association came away with six titles while finishing runner-up in another three divisions.

The strength of the Central Coast teams was definitely in the men’s divisions.

While missing out on the prestigious Men’s and Women’s Opens Division 1 titles after the men lost their final 4-2 to Homebush and the women lost 5-1 to Fairfield City, Central Coast was the winner in Men’s Opens Division 2 as well as the 40s, 45s, 50s and 55s age brackets.

Souths won four grand finals and Fairfield three.

Tournament director Bill Harrigan who said “it was great to finally get the games started”, knew there would be challenges throughout the event ensuring coronavirus restrictions weren’t breached.

Luckily organisers were lucky to avoid having to worry about an issue that was beyond their control.

“We dodged a bullet on Friday night and again on Saturday when the storms were threatening,” Harrigan said.

“There were big black clouds coming from the south but somehow they went straight past us.”

Oztag action returns to Coffs Harbour at the end of February when the Junior State Cup will be played by teams in the under-12 to under-17 age groups.
