Finishing high school can be both an exciting and daunting time for most students; for Cassey Sheather it is definitely exciting.

Securing an apprenticeship at Horizons Golf Club restaurant is just the beginning.
“Unstoppable” is how head chef Andrew Taylor describes Cassey.
“It doesn’t matter if she is making coffee or a meal, anything she does will be the best.”
“I have been cooking for 36 years and Cassey is a shining star.”

Cassey, formerly of Tomaree High School, told News Of The Area, “As I had made the pledge in Year 10 to complete Year 12, I was determined to finish school.”

“During the HSC, which is a very stressful time, I sought support from trusted teachers and support staff who encouraged my decisions and career choices.”

Judy Rickard, Food and Beverage Director, Horizons Golf Club, said, “When Cassey topped her class in both Hospitality and Food Technology, as an employer, I knew she wanted to be a chef.”

Although Cassey is only months into her first year of a three year apprenticeship, she recently achieved third place in the Hunter TAFE Network Apprentice Chef Culinary Competition.

“I walked out of the competition before the announcement, with no confidence; everyone else’s meal looked amazing,” Cassey said.

Taking out a place has done so much to boost Cassey’s confidence. She now has her sights set high and intends to compete in as many competitions as she can.

In the future, she hopes to enter The Brett Graham Scholarship which offers a $10,000 scholarship in London; previous recipients have gone on to become distinguished chefs.

Leading the catering team for the Real Futures presentation event on 10 November, Cassey is looking forward to creating a selection of delicious canapes to accompany the fine selection of wines.

Cassey would like to publicly acknowledge some special people who have helped her journey.

“Thank you to Peter and Judy Rickard for the opportunity you have given me and the belief and support to become the greatest person and chef I can be, and to Mr Scott O’Hara and Year Advisor Ms Sarah Bergan of Tomaree High School, for their support.”
