A truck driver will appear in court next month after police attached to Operation Slow Down seized prohibited drugs from his vehicle near Wagga Wagga.

Operation Slow Down is a statewide, high-visibility traffic operation running over the long weekend. It started at 12.01am this morning (Friday 3 October 2014) and will continue until 11.59pm on Monday (6 October 2014).

About 1.50am, police were patrolling the Sturt Highway near Alfredtown, 30km east of Wagga Wagga.

Officers stopped a truck for a routine inspection and subsequently searched the prime mover.

During the search, police allegedly located a clear, re-sealable bag containing a white powder believed to be methylamphetamine (“ice”).

A bottle containing cannabis seeds and drug paraphernalia were also seized during the searched.

The truck driver, a 48-year-old Picton man, was arrested and taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station.

He was charged with possession of drug equipment; possess prohibited drug; and supply prohibited drug – indictable quantity.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Wagga Wagga Local Court on Wednesday
19 November 2014.

As part of Operation Slow Down, police will be out in force conducting high-visibility patrols, random drug and alcohol testing, and speed enforcement across the state.

They will be targeting motorists speeding, not wearing seatbelts, drink and drug driving, as well as those fatigued and distracted.

Double demerits will be in force for all speeding, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences throughout this period.
