LAST Wednesday afternoon, a Mid Coast Coaches bus crashed into traffic lights at the front entrance of Mitre 10 in Macksville. Email us – media@newsofthearea.com.au “When this happens, as a safety mechanism, the vehicle’s brakes are automatically activated. “The driver’s training is to direct the bus into the gutter if the brakes should ever lock,” the spokesperson said. “There were cars stopped at the lights so the driver made the decision to take out the traffic lights and take the bus over the gutter rather than risk running over cars stopped at the lights or swerving into oncoming traffic.” No passengers apart from the driver were on the bus at the time. He was taken to hospital for observation but returned home the same day. Nobody else was injured in the incident although the traffic lights were knocked to the ground and there appeared to be minor damage to the front entrance of Macksville Mitre 10.
