I wear his medals every ANZAC Day to recognise the sacrifices he made.” Peter enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) at 22 years of age and was assigned to the HMAS ANZAC. After serving in the Vietnam War, he went on to specialise in hyperbaric medicine and served in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Philippines as a medic with the RAN Clearance Diving Team. “My responsibilities involved all aspects of diving including working in the recompression chambers and carrying antivenins for stonefish, box jellyfish and sea snakes,” he said. “During our stints in PNG, we disposed of nearly 2,000 pieces of unexploded WWII ordnance, including a live 500-pound bomb.” Peter said he was honoured to have worn the Australian uniform and serve his country. “It makes you especially proud on a day like ANZAC Day,” he said. Peter is now closely involved with the Bulahdelah RSL sub-branch and proudly marches beside his mates each year, Fellow RSL member Max Burrows, who served in the RAN at HMAS Nirimba, said ANZAC Day is a time to acknowledge the sacrifices that have been made, and continue to be made to protect our way of life. “I think about the boys I joined up with and my two brothers who served in Vietnam, every one of them was prepared to give their lives for the safety and wellbeing of the wonderful nation we have,” he said.
