Others help in the bar, canteen, pavilions and on the gates.” Mr Gooch, a long-term volunteer himself, also acknowledged the many people who assisted with preparations in the leadup to the show. Local resident Leo Turnbull has volunteered for the past 26 years. “I started helping with the flag races and campdrafting, then I worked with Marie Mason in the canteen and have since taken that over from her,” he said. “The show is the centrepiece of our town, you’ve got to make sure that you keep it going and it’s good that we’re getting younger people coming to volunteer.” Mr Turnbull said the best part of volunteering is simply just helping by doing things for your mates and the town. Fellow volunteer Irene Worth has also assisted at the show for many years. “I started helping Stella Woodward with the produce when everything was in the little pavilion, the big pavilion only had a roof back then, it didn’t even have walls so we have progressed considerably,” she said. “We’re one of the top 10 Country Shows in NSW so I think that says a lot.” Mrs Worth said the show brings the whole community together and has become a big part of Bulahdelah’s identity. To support the local community, Mr Gooch said 25 percent of the gate takings are donated to volunteer groups each year.
