FRESH off the back of the Bass Bash and Mid Coast fishing titles, local anglers recently took to the waters once again for the annual ‘Mate Against Mate’ competition.

With club pride at stake, the Blue Water Fishing Club pitted their skills against their mates from the Bulahdelah Fishing Club, with each having their eyes on the prize.
Bulahdelah Fishing Club Secretary Melissa Smith said the event was just a “friendly” contest between the clubs.
“We hold this competition annually in March,” she said.
“There are no limitations on where you fish or what you catch, as long as you are back for the weigh in.”
Both clubs recorded decent catches, however, Bulahdelah Fishing Club proved too strong and easily cruised to victory.
In the individual categories, Brett Shultz claimed the men’s title, followed closely by Tom Evans and Grant Bidgood, with all placegetters representing the Bulahdelah Fishing Club.
Winner of the women’s competition was Vanessa Shultz, with minor placings taken by Melissa Smith and Angela Bidgood, also members of Bulahdelah Fishing Club.
Olivia Smith’s fine form during the competition resulted in her claiming the Junior Champion title.
In the overall weight category, Brett Shultz took the top prize, narrowly pipping Blue Water Fishing Club’s Al Freihaut at the post.
The friendly competition finished with lunch and a few laughs between the mates.
Hoping to win back the title at next year’s event, Blue Water Fishing Club President David Schlenert issued a friendly challenge.
“The club is looking forward to next year’s competition, they are hoping to unbolt the trophy and return it to its rightful place at the Golf Club,” he said.
This year’s competition was hosted by the Bulahdelah Fishing Club.
