Senior Constable Trevor McLeod was on hand to talk to the students about stranger danger and strategies for staying safe in the community.

“We were reminded not to talk to people we don’t know,” Year 2 student Salome Reitsma said.

“We also learnt if you feel uncomfortable to walk away and go to the nearest place where you feel safe,” classmate Grace McRae added.

The children also took part in Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson by tuning in for a live broadcast from the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.

“The day focuses on keeping kids safe and making sure everyone is aware that there are dangers out there,” organising teacher Angie Vella said.

“It is about empowering children to recognise, react and report if they feel that something is not quite right.”

The Foundation was established by Bruce and Denise Morcombe in 2005, two years after their son Daniel was abducted and murdered while waiting to catch a bus on the Sunshine Coast.

The colour theme of the national child protection day is red, the colour Daniel was wearing the day he went missing.

“The Foundation is getting stronger every year and it is great to be involved in promoting a safer community for children,” Ms Vella said.

Bulahdelah was one of around 2,700 schools nationwide who took part in this year’s child safety event.
