Jacob Allen, Dylan Powick, Scott Smith, Shannon Powick and Jonathan Hawes were amongst the first students to use the dental service with Oral Health Therapist Sharyn Primrose, Head Teacher Warren Jones and Dental Assistant Donna Lean. With visits to Bulahdelah Central School commencing last week, the clinic provides a full range of dental services including check-ups, cleaning, fluoride, X-rays, fillings and preventative treatments. This service has been established through an agreement between the dental practice and school with the aim of providing easy access to oral health care for children in the community. Conducted by Oral Health Therapist Sharyn Primrose along with dental assistant Donna Lean, the school dental program is currently offered to students in Years 7 to 12 during school hours. “The aim of the program is to achieve improved oral health and provide easy access to dental care within the community,” Ms Primrose said. “At present, we are operating in the secondary school, but if there are enough children to sustain the program we could see the service extend into the primary school as well.” Bulahdelah Central School Welfare Head Teacher Mr Warren Jones, said he is pleased that the partnership formed between Bulahdelah Dental and the School has resulted in providing the beneficial on-site service to students. “This is a great example of health promotion in action and will result in improved dental health for students from Bulahdelah Central School,” he said. “Families with students eligible for the Medicare Dental Benefits Scheme or through a private health insurance fund are currently accessing this service.” Ms Primrose said dental treatments are provided free of charge to families who qualify for the Medicare dental scheme.
