THE Bulahdelah Central School Community has plenty to smile about with their top HSC results from 2016 ranking them ahead of other schools in the region. Principal Mr Don Hudson said the rankings show BCS finished in front of Hunter River, Irrawang, Dungog, Gloucester and Taree High Schools. BCS students Hannah Rietveld from Bulahdelah and Arlee Francis Nieswandt and Emily Kirkpatrick from Tea Gardens, each achieved a Band 6 (a result above 90 percent) earning them a place on the HSC Distinguished Achievers list. Arlee also achieved an E4 Band in Extension English, the highest possible ranking in an extension subject. A number of other students just missed out on a Band 6 by one or two marks. Mr Hudson attributes the students’ success to hard work over their two-years of senior study. “Students can’t achieve at the top level without persistence, dedication, study, revision and putting in the work required both in class and outside of class,” Mr Hudson said. “Our staff work hard to improve the teaching and learning that is happening in all our classrooms and I believe this is demonstrated every year with our results.” Many of the students received offers to study at universities and others have gained employment or are continuing their education at TAFE. Deputy Principal Mrs Deb Gilbert said staff were now focusing on implementing strategies to assist this year’s HSC class. These include a teacher-student mentor program, allocating specialist teachers to study periods and a flex Friday where students receive individual assistance in specific subject areas. “We traditionally rank higher than other schools in the region which shows that as a school, we are excelling in certain areas,” Mrs Gilbert said. “This gives us a bit of confidence in things we have implemented and guidance towards where we need to go for further success.” Mrs Gilbert said many support networks were in place to assist Year 12 through their HSC studies.
