A hotly contested paper plane challenge, showing you are never too old to have fun at a Blue Light event, face painting and balloon sculptures were amongst the many highlights inside. Interactive emergency service displays, stalls, sizzling snags and pass the footy games were popular activities outside. The celebration was organised by the Bulahdelah Blue Light Committee and supported by the CWA, Lions Club, Paramedics, Rural Fire Brigade, Volunteer Rescue Association and countless other volunteers. Reflecting on a successful 12 months, committee member Senior Constable Ash Ray said the highlight has been the support from the community. “Our events have been getting bigger and bigger,” he said. “With the support that we have been getting, we have been able to put on better activities for the kids.” The committee is now looking forward to expanding the program with plans to incorporate movie nights and other events. Ash said the aim of the program is to strengthen ties between the community and police. “It helps to break that barrier of police being someone you only see if you are in trouble,” he said. “The police are helpers of the community and it is very important that everyone, especially young people, realise they can talk to an officer if they need help.” Following the success of the weekend celebration, the community is now eagerly awaiting the next Blue Light event. “It was so much fun, I can’t wait for the next one,” 10-year-old Matthew Thompson said.
