Cans of beer, a bottle of wine and some costume jewellery were among the bitou bush and rubbish found by local Bitou Busters (BB) while they worked on the dunes at the car park end of Sanderling Avenue, Hawks Nest. 

On a sunny Saturday 26 July, the BBs worked on the dunes, re-opening a walking track that connected to The Michael Rowe Memorial Walk.

Further along the walking track, work was needed where the April storms had had blocked the path with fallen trees and bush debris.

The area needed chopping and lopping and clearing, exposing more bitou bushes and bags of general rubbish.

The next BB session in August will continue along the walking track, again clearing storm debris, bitou and rubbish.

Bitou Busters coordinator Jill Madden thanked everyone for their work.

The Michael Rowe Memorial Walk is a 5 km walk from Hawks Nest Surf Club to the boundary of the Myall Lakes National Park on Mungo Brush Road.

Part of the walk is very significant for the magnificent wild flower displays that will be seen on a guided walk at this year’s tenth annual Wildside Festival at Hawks Nest in September.

The festival, organised by Ian Morphett, Secretary of the Myall Koala & Environment Group, brings the community together and celebrates the natural environment of the Hawks Nest area.
