In that area, attractive native plants struggle to survive their choking hold and the worst of these are Bitou and Asparagus Fern.

Birds just love their tasty berries and so they spread far and wide at an alarming rate through native bushland elsewhere.

After a recent solid morning’s work by our local Bitou Busters, one section has been restored and more work will follow.

We do understand that many people find Asparagus Fern attractive and grow it lovingly in pots, in ferneries and in gardens, completely unaware of its alarming capacity to escape into bushland.

Council has conducted education campaigns (e.g. the “Weed and Feed” evening in the old library) aiming to address this problem.

Our group meets in Yamba Street opposite the Pharmacy at 9.15 every fourth Saturday and finishes the morning with a well-earned visit to a local coffee shop.

Tools and all necessary equipment are provided by Council.
