With the tourist season in full swing, visitors and locals are being asked to avoid the dredge sand hills at Winda Woppa for the sake of the ‘Little Terns’.

The dredge pile has become a nesting site and hatchery for the tiny birds which arrived from South East Asia last month.
“It seems Little Terns love Hawks Nest,” Jill Madden told News Of The Area.

“To date this year there are 90 nests, 110 eggs and so far 24 chicks and more appear every day.”

In the past only a few nests have been found but it seem the Little Terns have found a place that they love and have spread the word.

While the area has been signposted, visitors with children, or those walking their dog are being asked to be extremely vigilant and avoid the sand hills.
