BILLY Flanagan is the king of the Coffs Harbour Golf Club after the teenager claimed his first club championship on the weekend.

Having lost last year’s championship in a thrilling playoff, Flanagan left nothing to chance this year.

The 19-year-old started the championships with an impressive 66 and after two rounds had built a commanding lead of eight strokes.

A round of 69 on Saturday maintained the eight-stroke buffer over the chasing pack and a score of 70 on Sunday saw Flanagan win by 11 shots over Dave Newick. Aden Louez finished in third spot two strokes further back.

The winner admitted that he had some nerves prior to teeing off on Sunday despite the large lead.

“The night before the last round and the morning I started to think about it,” Flanagan said.

“During the week I didn’t really think about it, I was pretty calm.

“But the night and the morning were a bit nerve wracking just thinking of the outcome which you shouldn’t do but it’s hard not to.”

The winner of the nett prize among the A-Grade players was Brock Brindle who finished nine strokes ahead of Dan Curley and Paul Hope.

In the other grades Corey de Silva won the B-Grade championship while in C-Grade Derek Pond was the winner.

Pond finished 11 strokes ahead of James Parker with Bruce Pfeifer a further stroke behind. Luke Johnson was the C-Grade nett winner ahead of Craig Spencer.

The B-Grade win by de Silva was by two strokes over Kerry Wilson with Sean Brennan-Seymour another stroke back and Kieran Deane a shot behind third.

Wilson edged out Deane in the nett prize on a countback.

The senior champion was Wayne Cormick while Lochie Squires earned the junior champion title.

But the majority of the glory was for Flanagan who has a busy summer planned.

“I’m just going to keep grinding away, making my swing better and next year go away and start playing in some more tournaments which we couldn’t do this year sadly,” he said.
