Council Lifeguards from the Australian Lifeguard Service (ALS) will be on duty Monday to Friday and the Surf Lifesaving Club will patrol on weekends and public holidays. Club President Stephen Howell said around 70 club members will each complete 60 hours of volunteer service during the season. “The best thing about volunteering is being part of the community,” he said. “It is also about the friendships formed and the camaraderie with other volunteers.” Stephen said the weekend patrols are split into four-hour shifts involving, “Checking gear, setting up the beach and maintaining the vigil on the swim area.” “It is something that is active and enjoyable, and you can venture into the sports side of things as well,” he said. ASL has also provided a lifeguard to attend Tea Gardens Pool seven days a week. In addition, Council lifeguards will be present at eight other beaches in the MidCoast region during the January holiday period. ALS NSW Lifeguard Operations Manager Oliver Munson praised MidCoast Council for their commitment to safety. “Our focus, just like Council’s, is ensuring the safety of all beachgoers in the area,” Mr Munson said. “We look forward to continuing our strong relationship with Council and delivering a high level of service to the people of the Lower North Coast.” The ALS weekday patrols at Bennetts Beach will run until 25 January.
