The accolade places Bailey’s story in the top 10 of all entries submitted in the national competition. An Australian theme, coupled with invention of style and creativity, were key aspects of the award. Bailey said his 800-word story explored the relationship between a war veteran and his distant son. “It’s basically about a guy who returns home to visit his sick father,” Bailey said. “While reminiscing at the old house, he gains an understanding of his father after discovering photos and medals in a drawer, which makes him really appreciate his dad.” Bailey said the overall theme of grief and loss, was interwoven with the message that you shouldn’t judge until you know the full story. Bailey, who is a Year 12 student at Bulahdelah Central School, said the award has boosted his confidence in the leadup to the Higher School Certificate examinations. “I hope to include it in the HSC, so I have to keep working on it,” Bailey told News Of The Area. “The theme of the story relates very well to the topic of discovery that we are studying in English.” The prizes for the Youth Literacy Awards were provided by the estate of Norman McVicker OAM, who spent his life involved in writing and the performing arts.
