QUIETLY beavering away in the Bay is a band of dedicated volunteers making people’s stay at Tomaree Community Hospital a more comfortable experience.

In existence since the 1950s, when the hospital was in its old location near the Community Arts Centre, the Tomaree Auxiliary currently has 53 members.

These unsung heroes raise money in order to purchase much needed equipment for the hospital.

In recent times, they have enabled the purchase of two slings for patient moving devices, two air pressure mattresses, two lift chairs, easy access shelving for the pharmaceutical room plus many other items.

They also supply patients with sleepwear, toiletries and make knitted toys for children.

Each year brings five main fundraising events: two large raffles, Easter Craft Street Stall, Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings and a Fashion Parade in October.

The local community also provide kind donations.

All monies raised stay with the Tomaree Hospital to improve the facilities for the local community.

The Auxiliary currently has one of its raffles in full swing with a stall in the shopping centre where you can purchase tickets.

Following that is the Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings in August, with any donations of bread or sausages gratefully received.

The group is always looking for new members and both men and women and all ages are welcome.

Other than their fundraising endeavours, they are also a social bunch.

They meet the second Tuesday of each month at 10am at the hospital, with the meeting going for about an hour.

Following this, they head off for lunch at one of the Bay’s many fine restaurants and other social days are arranged during the year.

The always invaluable donations include sleepwear and wool.
