MEMBERS of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club headed north last week to compete in the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships on the Gold Coast.
“It’s the pinnacle of the sports competition nationally, and the largest sporting event held in Australia outside of the Commonwealth Games,” long time member Peter Rogers said.
After an extremely successful State Titles, including the club’s first ever Surfboat Gold Medal, the TGHN Beach team and the Masters Surfboat “Long Strokers” went to Kirra still on a high and again they came home with medals.
“With a high number of Queensland crews competing in conditions they are more used to, it was always going to be difficult, but the Long Strokers did themselves and the club proud,” Peter told News Of The Area.
“In tricky Queensland surf conditions, with the cyclone approaching, the “Long Strokers” Surfboat crew of Andrew Stubbs, John Estens, Peter Larkin and Ian Sunner missed the semi-finals by a single point after three challenging rounds of competition.”
“They did, however, out row far more fancied competition including the NSW State Gold Medallists in their age division.”
On the sand and better things were yet to come.
Jan and Tony Logue again dominated.
Tony Logue won silver in the one kilometre beach run.
Jan Logue cleaned up taking out Bronze in the one kilometre beach run, Silver in the beach sprint and Silver in the beach flags.
Andrew Stubbs made the two kilometre Beach Run Australian Final coming fifth.
“A magnificent achievement again for a club competing against others with far greater sponsorship and membership numbers,” Peter said.
“We’re looking forward to continued success in the 2018 season.’’
