There is a way to let them know we are thinking of our serving members, and thanking them for their service during the festive season.

Care packages can be sent free of charge to the Middle East, East Timor and the Solomon Islands so long as they strictly comply with Australia Post guidelines.

Packages can be sent to either male or female personnel, or even to an explosive detection dog.

In order to qualify for free postage, care packages can weigh no more than 2kg (cubic weight limit) and should be packaged within a “BM” sized box, which are available from Australia Post for approximately two dollars.

Choose from one of three serving destinations for male or female soldiers, Solomon Islands, East Timor or the Middle East and make the first line of your parcel to your choice of ‘An Australian Soldier/Sailor/Airman/Airwoman – Female/Male’.

For the Middle East, name who your package is for and send to: An Australian Soldier, Christmas Mail, Middle East Operations, AFPO 60 Australian Defence Force SYDNEY NSW 2890

For East Timor, send to: An Australian Soldier, Christmas Mail, East Timor Operations, AFPO 61 Australian Defence Force SYDNEY NSW 2890

For the Solomon Islands, send to: An Australian Soldier, Christmas Mail, Solomon Islands Operations, AFPO 62 Australian Defence Force SYDNEY NSW 2890.

Alternatively, you can send a care package to an Australian Explosive Detection Dog in Afghanistan, by addressing the package to; An Australian EDD Handler, Christmas Mail. Middle East Operations, AFPO 60 Australian Defence Force SYDNEY NSW 2890.

Suggestions for items to send could include toiletries, instant noodles, non-perishables, lollies, magazines, puzzle books or DVDs.

For the explosive detection dogs, you can send a box of dog biscuits, toys, tennis balls or treats for the handlers.

Do not include pornographic material, alcoholic beverages, clothing (except socks), pork products, cigarettes or chocolate.

This is a perfect project to do with the family, at little cost, that will make an immeasurable difference to a serving soldier overseas.

Don’t forget to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope in case your soldier would like to write back to you.
