Assisting teachers in using phonics for reading improvement MidCoast LGA (overall news) by NOTA - September 16, 2015September 16, 2015 A new guide which will assist teachers in using phonics to develop the reading skills of students has been launched. MP Stephen Bromhead said the Phonics Guide is part of a series of NSW Government initiatives to improve student outcomes through Great Teaching, Inspired Learning policy. “The Phonics Guide complements a requirement for teacher education courses to provide comprehensive phonics instruction,” Mr Bromhead said. “Research shows that teaching students about the relationship between sounds and spelling patterns is crucial to reading. “The NSW Government wants all teachers to use phonics and this guide provides every teacher in NSW with the skills and tools they need and the ability to use phonics is essential when developing reading skills in students. “The guide has been developed to assist teachers new to the profession, as well as those with extensive classroom experience.” The Phonics Guide is available from the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards online shop.
