The students and staff of Tomaree High School came together to recognise the defence community and, of course, ANZAC Day. Stephen Jennings of Tomaree High School told News Of The Area, “School Captains Dan Villamanca and Katerina Nicolopoulos with Flight Lieutenant Donna Watts-Endresz and student Madi Munro laid a wreath at the School’s Lone Pine Memorial during a moving ANZAC Day Service.” Madi Munro spoke at the service as did the Flight Lieutenant recognising one of the key days that commemorates the spirit of Australian and New Zealand Service Men and Women and acknowledges the sacrifices made especially by those who have given their lives in the service of our nation. Many of Port Stephens residents are servicemen and women attached to the Williamtown RAAF base. With these people that serve, are their families, the wives, husbands and importantly the children of those who have chosen a career which secures the future of our nation. There is no doubt that being an area which is a defence community has many challenges and benefits. There is the rotation of families in and out of their Bay postings, which sees students regularly moving from school to school, and of course there are the job opportunities not only within the Australian Defence Force but in the industries that support it, including the new aerospace centre at Williamtown. Tomaree High School students were made aware of the many job opportunities within the defence force after the service. To this community from school through to retirement there are many who have served, whose mothers and fathers continue to serve. We will remember them. By Marian SAMPSON School Captains Dan Villamanca and Katerina Nicolopoulos, with RAAF Flight Lieutenant Donna Watts-Endresz and Madi Munro who was the student speaker at the school’s ANZAC Day ceremony.
