ADVERTISING FEATURE: The rewards of volunteering with Linked to Life…come join the team!

Jan and Eva.

JAN Ryan signed up as a volunteer with what was then Neighbour Aid in January 1997, just 6 months after the organisation’s inception in May 1996.

For 24 years Jan has performed a vital role in bringing much joy to the lives of those she has touched and is instrumental in supporting older people to remain living in their own home.

“I had tried volunteering for several different service types in the local community, but when I heard about this new Neighbour Aid service, I knew it was the right fit for me,” Jan said.

“I knew that spending time with older people was something I would really enjoy.

“In my time with Linked to Life I have had the pleasure of being linked with many, many amazing characters who have had many and varied stories to tell.

“As much as I have been able to help them, volunteering with older people has also taught me a lot about myself and life in general.

“That’s what’s kept me volunteering with Linked to Life for so long.

“I never cease to be inspired by the experiences, wisdom and resilience of our older generation.”

Most recently, Jan has been assisting Eva to get out to the shops.

Once a fortnight they go out to shop for groceries, then enjoy a cuppa and friendly chat.

This small act of kindness has made all the difference in Eva’s life, and both enjoy some laughter and good times.

Volunteering is a great way of using your spare time for a worthwhile cause.

Caring about our neighbours and helping out when you can is what makes communities great.

Volunteering one or two hours a week to help an older person manage the simple tasks of daily living can go a long way to enabling them to remain living at home independently and prevent premature admission to a permanent care facility.
