TWO Port Stephens roads will receive much-needed improvements to the tune of $665,000 thanks to a successful grant application by Port Stephens Council.

A section of James Road at Medowie will be rehabilitated while Hannah Parade at One Mile will be resealed and the car park will be upgraded with funding from the NSW Government’s Fixing Local Roads initiative.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin congratulated Port Stephens Council on the funding, which is part of a $382 million program.

“Fixing Local Roads is all about helping regional and rural councils carry out vital road repairs and reduce the maintenance backlog for local roads.

“The local upgrades means people have smoother, safer trips to school, to work and across their regions.

“Importantly, it will also create much-needed jobs in Port Stephens as council commences work on these shovel-ready projects that will stimulate the economy,” he said.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the funding will allow Council to start work on these much-needed projects sooner than anticipated.

“We know the community of Medowie has been calling for a fix for James Road for some time, so it’s fantastic that we’re now able to get to work on rehabilitating this section of road.

“The funding will also allow us to reseal Hannah Parade at One Mile including the car park.

“Anyone who loves One Mile beach will know how popular this short stretch of road is and how much of a difference this will make to users.

“We’re also focused on the adjacent Gan Gan Road over the coming months.

“This is one of our highest priority projects as part of Council’s $3 million commitment to road rehabilitation across Port Stephens.

“These improvements will mean safer journeys on Port Stephens roads, which is a great thing for our community and visitors alike,” he said.

Fixing Local Roads works:

· Hannah Parade, One Mile — $315,000 to reseal the existing road pavement and extend the seal into the gravel parking area.

· James Road, Medowie — $350,000 to rehabilitate the existing road pavement from Boyd Boulevard extending 500 metres north.

Construction on both projects is scheduled to start in late 2021.
