Port Stephens Athletics Club President Bob Walkley said the local group of athletes competed in the 100m, 200m, 400m, Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Put and Discus.

“The athletes from our club were Aileesha Oudshorn, Mia Macdonald, Zara Shaw, Chloe Shaw, Searni Thorning and Jock Gilchrist.

“The two girls that I coach, Aileesha and Mia did really well both winning their respective 100 and 200m races and posting personal bests in these events and both won their long jump events.

“Zara Shaw came second in the High Jump 1.30m.”

Mr Walkley said that Covid permitting, the local track stars will have further chances to impress in coming weeks.
“There is another competition scheduled for 9 January.

“Then on 6 and 7 February there is a competition for U/9s- U/12s which is a qualifying comp for athletes to get to the Little Athletics State Championships,” he said.

Mr Walkley was also pleased with the new athletics facilities at Maitland, and hopes to see more similar amenities pursued across the region.

“I was really impressed with it, it is easy to get to from the Bay, less than hrs drive.

“There is plenty of parking, nice amenities, they have done a really good job on the layout of it. “All of the equipment is new and was included in the overall cost of the centre.

“We can only hope that more facilities like this are built in the Hunter area.”
