Their project this year is to save the planet.
In our beautiful Riverside Park in Raymond Terrace, a tree planting ceremony took place this week, with some special guests.
Scot MacDonald MLC, Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer and Port Stephens Council General Manager Wayne Wallis came together with Rotary District Governor Helen Ryan to plant a tree for a very special cause.
The ceremony was a show of support for a Rotary initiative to plant 1.2 million trees worldwide.
Rotary has asked each of its 1.2 million members to plant a tree by Earth Day, the 22 April 2018, to make a significant statement about the importance of building a sustainable environment and the need to address climate change.
District Governor Helen Ryan told News Of The Area, “The planting of this tree is to let everyone in our community know that Rotary intends to make a difference when it comes to our environment.”
“Rotary worldwide has 1.2 million members and our International President Ian Riseley has challenged Rotary members globally to plant 1.2 million trees in an effort to raise awareness about environmental issues.”
President Riseley has challenged each rotary club to plant one tree for each club member in the period 1 July 2017 to Earth Day on the 22 April 2018.
Planting trees will remove carbon dioxide from the air and help slow down global warming.
He hopes that the benefits of Rotary’s tree planting will be greater than just environmental, and that the greater result will be a Rotary that recognises their responsibility to not only to the people on our planet, but to the planet itself.
