Medowie has received one of the first machines in the state government roll out of the new initiative, ahead of its official launch and collection start date of 1 December.

The Medowie kiosk was officially unveiled this week with Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer and Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC visiting to announce the new venture.

“This scheme will be easy and convenient for people to use,” Mr MacDonald said.

“It will be a game-changer – it will make a major contribution to helping the NSW Government reach its goal to reduce litter volume by 40 percent by 2020.”

People will be able to choose to donate their refund directly to selected charities or transfer it to their designated account.

People will also be able to redeem the refund for cash from Woolworths supermarkets or use a credit voucher towards their shopping at Woolworths across NSW (except Metro branded Woolworths stores).

There are plenty more kiosks to be installed across the state in the coming weeks, with hundreds of sites becoming collection points across the state.

Drink containers eligible for the 10-cent refund include most containers between 150ml and three litres.

Containers should not crushed or broken and have the original label attached to be eligible for the refund.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “I’m excited about Medowie being one of the first locations chosen for the Return and Earn scheme.”

“I think this could be a great fundraiser for charity groups, and a nice little pocket money incentive for children.”

“I have heard the Scouts and Guides could also potentially use this as a clean up scheme within our community, so I look forward to seeing this become something that helps us to keep our neighbourhoods clean,” he said.

Other locations will be finalised in the coming weeks.
