Garry Custer, a professional Tennis Coach, is assisted on the courts with the assigned class teacher and three or four responsible adult volunteers. In 2017, the tennis coaching program enters into its seventh year and is again expecting around 100 Anna Bay students to participate with 584 children having already participated in the program. The program is a community gift to the school, students and school parents. As head tennis coach, Garry Custer, former Tennis Pro, developed the unique Anna Bay Public School Tennis Program. It aims to encourage students in the basics of playing tennis, from the rules of the game to the basic stroke techniques, in a disciplined yet fun environment. Garry combines professionalism with a sense of humour while he imparts knowledge and skill. Sponsors, along with the Boat Harbour and One Mile communities and the occasional grant, have raised all the funds required to conduct these special annual senior tennis coaching classes. The Boat Harbour Community also provide all the racquets and balls required for the School Tennis Program. To date the Boat Harbour Recreation Club has managed to raise in excess of $35,500 for this school gift to our very young community members. A Community award was presented to the founder of the program, Coral Kearins of Boat Harbour Recreation Club, during 2016 Education Week, for the co-ordination and organisation of the annual Anna Bay Public School Senior Tennis Coaching program. Coral Kearins told Bay News Of The Area, “There would be no tennis program without the wonderful Fogg Family, Port Stephens Coaches and the myriad of sponsors throughout the years.” “It is a gift to the students of Anna Bay School by our wonderful community, and we could not do any of it without them,” Ms Kearins said.
