Through getting creative and having hands-on involvement the group will work towards making a short film over four sessions of four hours during the spring school holidays.

Donna Hunt, a local photographer and filmmaker, will lead the young people through various aspects, providing tips and tricks, mentoring and supporting them to create the short film.

“If you’re aged fourteen to 24 years and keen to learn how to take and make your own films and ready to unleash your creative potential with others, grab your phone and register,” Di Woods, Manager at CHNC told News Of The Area.

The film and photography workshop has been funded by the NSW Government.

Youth are encouraged to attend all four sessions, 10am-2pm on September 27, 28, 29, 30.

There will be a launch and community viewing of their finished film on Friday 7 October.

“The benefits of using filmmaking are huge, particularly when developing young people’s creativity, as well as learning soft skills such as communication and teamwork,” said Di.

“The different roles on a film set are great at targeting specific skills, for example directing is brilliant for leadership and decision making while operating the camera is great for developing listening and technical skills.

“Being involved in making a short film gives young people the chance to express their interests and creativity in a small burst.”

Doing this over several sessions helps to develop an ability to look at what they have collaboratively planned and illustrate it in one small and realistic, manageable idea.

“It allows young people to experiment with shared ideas and generate ideas for other projects they may want to be involved in,” Donna Hunt, Community Worker at Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre told NOTA.

“They can create something unique, authentic and amazing and let it grow from there.

“It provides young people with other ways to communicate.

“The film can explore aspects, topics or messages that are important to the young people involved.

“It provides an opportunity for young people across our community to try new skills, in a safe and inclusive environment, that they may not have had the opportunity or support to be able to give it a go otherwise.

“We are looking forward to working with an eclectic bunch and helping them create something they are passionate about,” said Donna.

Young people will also have the opportunity to register through Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre free, to meet up and attend the photography exhibition and entry into the National Cartoon Gallery free of charge.

This event will be Friday 7 October in the afternoon.

Places for both of these opportunities are limited and registration is required.
