THE 3R’s Overnight Homeless Shelter Project is firing up its fundraising and awareness amongst the community with a stall at Harbour Markets at The Jetty on Sunday 26 June, from 8am to 2pm.

Proceeds raised will support the project, managed by Doris Cowan, hoping to bring an overnight shelter for people experiencing homelessness to Coffs Harbour.

Items for sale include clothing, bedding, kitchenware, DVDs, toys, canned and packaged food and a whole lot
more.

As with Doris’ first successful sale at Harbourside Markets, nothing is priced over $10.

“The aim of having the market stall is to provide affordable needs to people struggling while all proceeds go to the 3R’s Overnight Homeless Shelter Project to assist the housing crisis in Coffs Harbour,” Doris told News Of The Area.

“It is also good for awareness about our project.

“The community is interested in the location of the shelter as well as how they can get involved.

“I am able to stock the market stall as the community, having heard about our project, have kindly donated goods for sale including bedding, clothes, kitchenware and toys.”

Doris has also recently teamed up with Mission Australia to help distribute these items to those in need for the winter months while the 3R’S continue to search for a suitable location for the Overnight Homeless Shelter.

“Rotary Daybreak met with Council on my behalf to propose a ten-week trial in Park Avenue car park, however this was rejected due to security issues in an open space.”

The search for a location continues.

“3R’S Homeless Shelter needs a permanent after-hours premises with functioning kitchen and bathroom facilities close to the CBD.”

Talking about another fundraiser she is organising, Doris can now confirm she has a venue for the Christmas in July event on Thursday 14 July, proceeds of which will help with the annual Community Christmas Luncheon that she and her husband David have taken on.

“Coffs Harbour Surf Lifesaving Club has kindly donated the venue and lucky door prizes in order to bring businesses together for both networking and fundraising on a fun night to end the financial year stresses,” said Doris.

“It is also an opportunity to promote local businesses that have been doing it tough; we have a silent auction and an evening of fun with local entertainment and after-work food and cocktails.”

If you are unable to attend the event Doris is also looking for donations for both the silent auction and the Community Christmas Luncheon as well as volunteers leading up to Christmas and on Christmas Day at the Cavanbah Hall from 9am to 3pm.
